As opioid abuse has soared, more pregnant woman are using opioids and more infants are diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome. Pregnant women often do not receive optimal diagnosis and treatment for their opioid use. The care of newborns with neonatal abstinence syndrome often involves prolonged use of opioids and separation from their mothers.
This one day educational conference will highlight cutting edge research for both pregnant women using opioids and their newborn offspring.
- Presentation of a new toolkit developed by the California Maternity Quality Care Collaborative, with evidence-based standards of care for pregnant women using opioids, both prenatally and during hospitalization for delivery.
- Pediatrician Dr. Matthew Grossman from Yale University will review research on using a QI approach (multiple cycles of testing small changes) to making newborn care for infants exposed to opioids more family-centered, lowering the length of stay from an average of 30 days to 5 days.
